VPS Hosting Compared: Best Virtual Private Servers in 2026
A VPS gives you your own slice of a physical server: reserved memory, root access and the freedom to install anything, for a fraction of what a whole machine costs. We track 658 live VPS plans from 37 providers, so real entry prices, specs, bandwidth and 30-day uptime sit side by side. The table below ranks every provider by our DHH Score, and prices refresh every few hours — no paid rankings, no stale promo sheets.
VPS hosting in 2026: the market at a glance
VPS pricing has split into two worlds. At the bottom, the cheapest VPS plan in our tracker right now is 1 GB 1 vCPU Shared Pool at 3HCloud for $1.50 (1 vCPU · 1 GB RAM · Unlimited traffic · 1 Gbps). A few dollars more buys a lot more machine: Contabo's Cloud VPS 12 (12 GB RAM) packs 6 vCPU · 12 GB RAM · 100 GB NVME · 0.2 Gbps into $3.83, and SSD Nodes sells 2 vCPU · 8 GB RAM · 160 GB SSD · 4 TB traffic · 10 Gbps for $5.50. At the other end, 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM cost $32.95 at ChemiCloud. The difference is not only hardware: it is support, network, locations and how the price behaves at renewal.
Every price on this page comes from the same tracker that fills the table below and follows the currency switcher at the top of the page.

VPS tiers, explained
- Entry: 1–2 vCPU and 1–4 GB of RAM. Enough for a small website, a VPN, a bot or a staging box. 3HCloud, Selectel, Database Mart, HostPapa, InterServer and Vultr all start here; Vultr's Cloud Compute plan with 1 vCPU · 1 GB RAM · 25 GB SSD · 1 TB traffic costs $5.00.
- Mid-range: 4–8 vCPU and 8–16 GB. The sweet spot for production apps, databases and a handful of containers. IONOS's VPS L+ (6 vCPU · 8 GB RAM · 240 GB NVME · Unlimited traffic · 1 Gbps) costs $8.00, SSD Nodes' KVM / MEDIUM (4 vCPU · 16 GB RAM · 320 GB SSD · 8 TB traffic · 10 Gbps) $9.42, and Hostinger's KVM 4 (4 vCPU · 16 GB RAM · 200 GB NVME · 16 TB traffic · 1 Gbps) $12.99.
- Large: 12 vCPU, 32 GB and up. For busy databases, build servers and game servers. SSD Nodes' KVM / 8X-LARGE (12 vCPU · 64 GB RAM · 1229 GB NVME · 32 TB traffic · 10 Gbps) costs $18.00, while the biggest instances in our tracker — the top plans at Vultr and VPSServer — run into thousands per month.
Shared vCPU or dedicated vCPU?
Most entry VPS plans share physical CPU cores between customers: you get the vCPU count on the label, but not a guarantee that every vCPU is a full core at every moment. That is fine for websites and light apps. For sustained CPU work — builds, video encoding, game servers — look for plans sold with dedicated or optimized CPUs: 3HCloud separates its Shared Pool plans from CPU Optimized ones (1 vCPU · 2 GB RAM · Unlimited traffic · 1 Gbps for $6.00), Vultr sells High Frequency and High Performance lines next to its regular Cloud Compute, and Hivelocity labels its entry VPS plans as virtual shared.
Managed or unmanaged?
A standard VPS is unmanaged: the provider keeps the hardware and network running, while the operating system, updates and security are yours. That is how Contabo, Vultr, OVHcloud, SSD Nodes and Hostinger's KVM plans work. If you would rather not administer a server, some hosts sell managed VPS on top: GreenGeeks' Managed VPS starts at $69.95, Web Hosting Canada's VPS Edge (managed) at $39.74, and One.com's Managed Cloud Server S at $57.03. The premium over a self-managed plan with similar specs is the price of someone else doing the patching.
Bandwidth, ports and network
- Unmetered traffic comes with the entry plans at OVHcloud, IONOS, MonoVM, UltaHost, Virtualine and 3HCloud.
- Metered allowances are common and usually generous: HostPapa, Hostinger and SSD Nodes include 4 TB on their entry VPS and VPSServer 5 TB, while Vultr's smallest plans start at 0.5 TB.
- Port speed matters as much as the quota: Linveo, SSD Nodes, VPSServer, MonoVM and Virtualine advertise 10 Gbps ports, while Contabo's entry Cloud VPS plans run on 200 Mbit/s ports.
Where the servers are
If your users are spread out, the number of regions matters more than a dollar a month. The widest VPS footprints we track are Vultr (32 data centers), UltaHost (27), MonoVM (25) and VPSServer (21), followed by SSD Nodes and Timeweb (14 each), Contabo (11) and Hostinger and IONOS (10 each). Canadian workloads have local options at Servarica (Montreal), Web Hosting Canada (Montreal and Vancouver) and DotMoose (Calgary).
Watch the renewal price and the term
VPS promos are less aggressive than shared hosting, but they exist. IONOS's VPS M+ starts at $5.00 and renews at $11.00, Hostinger's KVM 1 goes from $6.49 to $11.99, GreenGeeks' VPS 4GB from $9.99 to $19.99, and DreamHost's VPS Stack 4 from $5.99 to $15.99. Contabo's headline prices assume a 24-month term; month to month, its Cloud VPS 12 (12 GB RAM) costs $5.10. Vultr, VPSServer, Linveo, Selectel and 123 Reg charge the same price every month.

FAQ
In our live tracker the cheapest VPS plan is 1 GB 1 vCPU Shared Pool at 3HCloud for $1.50 (1 vCPU · 1 GB RAM · Unlimited traffic · 1 Gbps). The From / mo column in the table above shows every provider's live entry price, re-checked every few hours — but the cheapest plan is not always the one with the specs you need.
On shared hosting many websites run under one operating system and the host decides what software you can use. A VPS is a virtual machine with its own operating system, reserved memory and root access, so you can install any stack, run background processes and open custom ports. It costs more and needs more know-how, unless you buy a managed VPS.
A VPS is a slice of a physical server shared with other customers through virtualization; a dedicated server is the whole machine. A VPS is cheaper and can usually be resized in minutes, while a dedicated server gives you every core, the full disk and no noisy neighbors.
For a small website or a VPN, 1–2 GB is enough. A WordPress site with caching or a small database is comfortable with 4 GB, and 8–16 GB covers most production apps and several containers. Memory is where VPS prices differ most, so compare the specs in the sample table above, not only the headline price.
Some do. IONOS's entry VPS renews at $11.00 after $5.00, Hostinger's at $11.99 after $6.49, and GreenGeeks' at $19.99 after $9.99. Contabo's headline prices assume a 24-month term. Vultr, VPSServer, Linveo and Selectel charge the same price every month.
The Uptime 30d column is our own measurement: we request each provider's website every few minutes from our monitoring server and average the last 30 days. It shows how well a company runs its own infrastructure; it is not a measurement of your server, and no provider pays to rank.
